Genset Room Noise Control



Like many types of rotating machinery, reciprocating engine-powered generator sets produce noise and vibration. Whether these generator sets run continuously in prime power applications or only occasionally in standby applications, their operating sound levels often must be reduced to comply with local and government regulations. In Malaysia, the installation of the Diesel Generator Set must get written approval from the Department of Environment (DOE).


Generator set noise is produced by six major sources :-

  1. Engine noise – This is mainly caused by mechanical and combustion forces and typically ranges from 100 dB(A) to 121 dB(A), measured at one meter, depending on the size of the engine.
  2. Radiator Fan noise – This results from the sound of air being moved at high speed across the engine and through the radiator. Its level ranges from 100 dB(A) to 105 (A) dB at one meter.
  3. Alternator noise – This is caused by cooling air and brush friction and ranges from approximately 80 dB(A) to 90 dB(A) at one meter.
  4. Induction noise – This is caused by fluctuations in current in the alternator windings that give rise to mechanical noise that ranges from 80 dB(A) to 90 dB(A) at one meter.
  5. Engine exhaust – Without an exhaust silencer, this ranges from 120 dB(A) to 130 dB(A) or more and is usually reduced by a minimum of 15 dB(A) with a standard silencer.
  6. Structural/mechanical noise – This is caused by the mechanical vibration of various structural parts and components that are radiated as sound.

To reduce noise transmission through the exhaust gas flow, Exhaust Silencers are installed between the exhaust outlet openings of the generator and the end of the exhaust tail pipe.

Vibration Isolators 

To reduce noise transmission, Spring or Rubber Isolators are installed under the generator set skid based to reduce the noise transmitted through the floor of the generator room.

Belly Tank

Belly Tanks or Sub-Base Tanks,
designed with your needs in mind. Our tanks are engineered to address the most critical issues of concern when it comes to fuel storage and transportation.

Belly Tanks also known as Sub-Base Tanks, typically sit beneath a generator powered by diesel fuel oil. The Belly Tank is reinforced to withstand the generator's weight together with the fuel needed to power the generator.

Among the advantages of a sub-base tank are: -
  • saves floor space associated with a freestanding day tank, especially essential for a completely enclosed outdoor generator kit,
  • the engine draws from the tank directly minimizing the piping costs and performance risks associated with a suction pipe.
With a focus on capacity, our tanks are designed to hold the required amount of fuel for your specific application.The sub-base tank is designed for outdoor generators to allow a storage requirement of up to 48 hours of run time fuel.

Single Wall and Double Wall Fuel Tanks 

Single-wall tanks only have one shell encasing the fuel, whereas double-wall tanks have an inner shell surrounded by a second, larger containment shell.

Every fuel tank requires secondary containment that will prevent fuel from entering the environment. For a single-wall tank, this safety feature has to be built into the storage site, as it is not present in the tank itself. This is called external bunding. Specialist civil engineering is necessary for this construction. 

A double-wall tank has an interstitial space between the two walls that fulfills the function of secondary containment in the event of leakage. No external containment safety feature is required in the storage site. For this reason, a double-wall tank is referred to as a self-bunded tank. It’s a tank within a tank.

In terms of storage, double-wall tanks are safer than single-wall tanks, and also suitable for the transportation of fuel.

ISTIQ ACOUSTIC CANOPY is designed to comply to the DOE regulation. The canopy are equipped with Discharge, Intake and Exhaust silencers. The noise level is designed to achieved 70 to 75 dB(A) measured at 3 meter away.
In selecting a silencer for a canopy, a balance between noise reduction, pressure drop and heat rejection need to be calculated cautiously By using internally developed software, ISTIQ NOISE CONTROL can help to make the right choice quickly and most importantly, accurately.


Canopy application for housing a generator set has gaining its popularity over the years. This is due to a portability of the set to be from one place to another and furthermore the cost for housing a generator set is cheaper as compare to a normal concrete house.Acoustic Canopy


The internal construction of the canopy panel uses only rockwool and protected with perforated G.I. This construction has proven to be the most cost effective in the long run.
ISTIQ NOISE CONTROL has developed the modular system panel which provides great flexibility at low cost. The panel are standard 65mm thickness, formed from 2.3mm mild steel, inert acoustic infill and galvanised perforated inner sheet steel. The finest quality materials and workmanship ensure that a final solution gives the best in noise control without affecting airflow, operation, maintenance or inspection.
Exhaust pipe which is inside the canopy must be insulated to avoid overheating problem. The exhaust lagging is done by using rockwool as thermal insulation wrapped with aluminium jacketing.
Fuel tank is located at the base frame. The designed therefore will serve dual purposes - acting as a supporting base and fuel tank. The body and the base can be separated for maintenance (genset overhaul) in the future.
Windows, exhaust penetrations, radiators and electrical cables, fitting and fixtures are all standard.
